Ukraine Strikes Russian Oil, Chemical Plants in Deep Assault

(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced Sunday that Kyiv had carried out a strike on an oil facility in Russia's Yaroslavl region, describing the target as a strategically significant node in Moscow's national fuel reserve network.

Writing on US social media company X, Zelenskyy also disclosed that Ukrainian forces had hit the Azot chemical plant in Russia's Tula region, characterising the facility as a critical component of Moscow's explosives manufacturing capability.

The Ukrainian leader added that air traffic restrictions had been imposed at six Russian airports, with air raid alerts declared across 28 Russian regions since Saturday evening.

Zelenskyy further claimed that Ukrainian forces had struck Russian military logistics infrastructure inside occupied Ukrainian territory as part of the broader assault.

"Ukraine is carrying out its plan of long-range sanctions against Russia and the assigned tasks regarding mid-range strikes in response to Russia's refusal to end this war," he said.

He made clear that Kyiv had extended every possible olive branch to Moscow, stating that Ukraine had offered "every possible format for negotiations," only to be met with what he described as continued escalation and attempts to widen the conflict.

"It stands to reason that the war is coming back to where it came from," Zelenskyy said.

In a separate statement, Zelenskyy accused Russia of launching 1,920 attack drones, 1,790 guided aerial bombs, and 17 missiles of various types against Ukraine over the course of the past week alone.

Russian authorities, meanwhile, confirmed that industrial fuel storage facilities in the Yaroslavl region had been struck in what they described as a "massive" Ukrainian drone offensive. Regional Governor Mikhail Evraev announced on Russian social media platform Max that traffic toward Moscow had been halted and that emergency crews were actively working to bring a resulting fire under control.

Tula Governor Dmitry Milyaev reported on Telegram that debris from intercepted Ukrainian drones had fallen on the grounds of an industrial enterprise in the city of Novomoskovsk during efforts to repel the assault.

"Emergency services have been organized to respond, and the nature of the damage is being determined," Milyaev wrote.

The strikes form part of a sharply intensifying Ukrainian campaign against Russian energy infrastructure. Earlier this month, Zelenskyy revealed that Ukrainian forces had targeted 15 Russian oil refineries between January and May, claiming that nearly 40% of Russia's primary oil refining capacity had been taken offline as of May.
