Russia Vows “Tough Measures” in Response to New EU Sanctions Package
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told reporters during a briefing that Moscow strongly opposes what it considers “illegitimate unilateral coercive measures,” adding that Russia believes increasing numbers of countries share its position on such restrictions.
The comments come after the European Union advanced its 21st sanctions package against Russia, aimed at further limiting Moscow’s capacity to finance its ongoing war in Ukraine.
EU officials have said the latest round of restrictions is intended to increase economic pressure and reduce Russia’s ability to sustain military operations.
Russian authorities, however, have consistently rejected Western sanctions, arguing that they are politically motivated and unlawful under international norms, and have previously promised retaliatory steps in response to each new round of measures.
