Russia Reports Record Workforce Participation, Low Unemployment at SPIEF

(MENAFN) Russia’s labor market is showing strong indicators of stability, with unemployment at historically low levels and workforce participation reaching a record high, according to Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova.

Speaking at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Golikova said the share of employed citizens has risen to 61.5%, while unemployment remains at approximately 2.2%, based on figures presented during a panel discussion focused on artificial intelligence, labor transformation, and emerging professions.

According to reports, she noted that despite these strong headline indicators, the labor market continues to face structural challenges, particularly in productivity levels. She pointed out that Russia ranks 37th globally in labor productivity, even though it is a leading country in training skilled vocational workers.

Golikova added that emerging technologies, particularly generative AI and robotics, could significantly improve efficiency, potentially increasing labor productivity by around 21% by 2032. However, she emphasized that such gains depend on the development of a workforce capable of adapting to new technological demands.

She described artificial intelligence primarily as a tool to enhance productivity rather than replace human labor, arguing that education systems must prioritize digital and technical competencies to prepare workers for changing job requirements.

According to reports, she also said that AI is expected to reshape job functions rather than eliminate entire professions outright. Some sectors—particularly retail, logistics, and warehousing—could experience the most noticeable shifts in labor demand if adoption rates increase significantly.

The remarks were delivered during the 29th edition of SPIEF, a major international economic forum held in St. Petersburg that brought together tens of thousands of participants from more than 100 countries to discuss global economic trends and policy directions.
