Russia's Leningrad Region Faces Record Drone Assaults

(MENAFN) Russia’s Leningrad region has experienced its most intense wave of drone attacks to date, with over 240 drones intercepted in the past week, regional Governor Alexander Drozdenko reported on Saturday.

Drozdenko noted that the heaviest assault occurred on Monday, when 70 drones were shot down in a single day, while 36 more were intercepted over the past 24 hours. “Since March 22, the region has been on heightened alert, repelling unprecedented attacks by enemy UAVs,” he said on Max, adding that emergency services are operating continuously.

Some drones struck infrastructure and transport facilities, causing minor damage, with the main target being the port of Ust-Luga, a key hub for Russia’s energy exports. The port was hit again overnight, sparking a fire that rescue teams worked to control.

Pulkovo Airport in St. Petersburg faced repeated temporary restrictions, leading to 117 flight cancellations and 211 delays. Drozdenko urged residents to follow air raid safety protocols, avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from windows, and refrain from approaching drone debris or filming air defense operations.

Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin reported that the capital also came under drone attack, with emergency teams responding to a crash site. In the Belgorod region, one person was killed by Ukrainian shelling, while in Samara, authorities said an industrial site in Tolyatti was hit.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that over 3,000 Russian drones, along with 1,450 guided aerial bombs and 40 missiles, were intercepted across Ukraine this week. “Ukraine is being struck by virtually the same attack drones that target the countries of the Middle East and the Gulf region,” he said, suggesting a shared origin.
