Russian Oil Shipment Heads to Cuba as US Eases Enforcement on Humanitarian Grounds
As stated by reports, the Russian tanker Anatoly Kolodkin is nearing Cuban territorial waters with an estimated 730,000 barrels of crude oil onboard. Tracking data suggests the vessel could arrive at the port of Matanzas by Tuesday.
Despite the presence of US Coast Guard vessels in the area, enforcement action was not taken. According to an informed source, “the Trump administration did not order those vessels to act.”
“Barring orders instructing it otherwise, the Coast Guard planned to let the tanker reach Cuba as of Sunday afternoon,” the same source added, speaking anonymously.
US President Donald Trump has previously warned of imposing tariffs on nations supplying fuel to Cuba. However, he indicated that this particular shipment was being allowed for humanitarian reasons. Speaking to journalists aboard Air Force One, he said: “We don’t mind having somebody get a boat load because they need to survive,” adding, “I’d prefer letting it in, whether it’s Russia or anybody else, because the people need heat and cooling.”
At the same time, Trump expressed skepticism about Cuba’s stability, stating that he still expects the country to “fail soon,” while also noting that the United States would be prepared to “help it out.”
