Norwegian Jets Get Deployed Over Russian Military Activity Near Finnmark
According to the Norwegian Armed Forces, sensors picked up Russian Il-20M aircraft near Finnmark on both Tuesday and Wednesday. "NOR F 35s from Evenes scrambled, identified and shadowed them," the statement said, according to reports.
Officials noted that in both cases, the Russian aircraft remained within international airspace.
The armed forces added that such encounters are routine and expected, particularly during large-scale exercises like Cold Response, which is currently taking place in northern Norway.
Earlier Wednesday, two Norwegian F-35 jets on standby took off from Evenes Air Station after a Russian Il-20M—used by Russia for reconnaissance and surveillance—was detected with its transponder switched off.
On Tuesday, another Il-20M was also identified and shadowed by Norwegian F-35s before it turned north from Soroya and returned to the Kola Peninsula, the armed forces said.
