Norway Scrambles Fighter Jets Twice After Russian Army Aircraft Detected

(MENAFN) Norwegian fighter jets were dispatched on two consecutive days after Russian military aircraft were detected in international airspace near Finnmark, according to reports from the country’s armed forces.

The Norwegian Armed Forces said sensors picked up Russian Il‑20M aircraft off the Finnmark coast on both Tuesday and Wednesday. “NOR F‑35s from Evenes scrambled, identified and shadowed them,” the statement noted.

Officials emphasized that in both cases, the Russian aircraft remained in international airspace. “Such events are routine and expected, particularly during large exercises like Cold Response, which is currently taking place in northern Norway,” the statement added.

On Wednesday, two Norwegian F‑35 jets on standby took off from Evenes Air Station to intercept the Il‑20M, a reconnaissance and surveillance aircraft operated by the Russian military, which was flying with its transponder switched off but was detected by Norwegian monitoring systems.

The Norwegian Armed Forces also reported that the same type of aircraft had flown near Finnmark on Tuesday. It was identified and shadowed by two F‑35s before it turned north from Soroya and returned to the Kola Peninsula.
