Russia’s Aide Calls for BRICS Nations to Strengthen Naval Ties

(MENAFN) A senior Russian official has called for the BRICS countries to develop closer maritime collaboration to secure global shipping routes from perceived threats, including Western interference. The recommendation comes amid recent incidents where the US has seized tankers it claims were transporting sanctioned oil, highlighting the growing importance of coordinated naval strategies.

“We will tap into the potential of BRICS, which needs to be given a full-fledged strategic maritime dimension,” he said, emphasizing that the bloc’s capabilities should extend to protecting vital sea lanes.

The official pointed to ongoing joint exercises as examples of such cooperation. He noted that drills earlier this year, held in January and February, involved multiple member states working together to enhance operational readiness at sea. The maneuvers, named the “Will for Peace 2026” exercises, began off the coast of Cape Town, South Africa, shortly after a Russian-flagged oil tanker was seized by US forces for allegedly violating sanctions.

According to reports, Russia, China, and Iran participated in these drills, with the United Arab Emirates also joining the January exercises. The events are intended to improve coordination among participating nations and demonstrate the ability to respond collectively to maritime challenges.

As stated by reports, the Russian aide, who also chairs the Russian Maritime Board, stressed that the developments show the value of expanding BRICS’ strategic reach at sea and ensuring protection of commercial and strategic interests.
