Russia, Cuba plan on starting logistics hub in Gulf of Mexico
Tatyana Mashkova, head of Russia’s National Committee for Economic Cooperation with Latin American Countries, said both nations are working simultaneously to establish the hub at Cuba’s Port of Mariel. Located at the entrance to the Gulf of Mexico, Mariel boasts a container terminal, free-trade zone, modern warehouses, and rail connections. The port area offers favorable tax incentives and customs benefits to attract investment and boost local manufacturing. Several Russian firms are already operating there.
Mashkova added that Russian and Cuban business leaders are exploring ways to deepen financial cooperation, with support from the Russian Export Center, to simplify bilateral trade and reduce logistical challenges.
She emphasized that Russian companies could use the Cuban hub as a platform to expand their goods’ reach throughout Central America and the Caribbean.
Additionally, Cuba has proposed establishing an industrial park within the Mariel special economic zone for the Russia-led Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). This 50-hectare site would be leased to the EAEU for 50 years, with an option to extend, enabling member states to localize production, invest, and improve access to Latin American markets.
The EAEU includes Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Russia. Cuba has cooperated with the bloc for years and became an official observer in 2020.
